How to Merge Pickaxes in Merge Dig Simulator
Two matching pickaxes become the next tier — including the Secret rainbow tool.
Merging is the identity of Merge Dig Simulator. Mining without merging is a coin minigame. Merging without mining is an empty shop. The Roblox description leads with “Merge Pickaxes,” and official thumbnails show the equation in giant type: two Diamond pickaxes plus a plus-sign equal a rainbow Secret pickaxe.
This page is the how-to for that equation. Pair it with the pickaxe tier list when you are choosing which duplicate to buy, and with how to mine when you need the coins to buy the duplicate.

The rule
Two of the exact same pickaxe become one stronger pickaxe. That is a 2-to-1 merge, not a 3-to-1 merge and not a “feed any junk into a cauldron” merge. If the names do not match, they will not combine. A Diamond plus a rusty starter is two inventory slots, not a secret.
Keep the names honest. Builds change. The public art names Diamond and Secret; your live shop might show earlier rungs such as wood, stone, or iron. The rung names matter less than the duplicate rule. Always buy a copy of what you already hold before you stretch for a tool three shelves higher.
How to actually combine them
Depending on the current HUD you will either:
- drag one pickaxe onto its twin, or
- tap a Merge / Combine prompt when two matching tools are equipped, or
- use an auto-merge toggle if a later upgrade adds one.
If nothing happens, you do not have a true duplicate. Shop copies are not always the same as a tool you already merged upward. Read the name twice. Then try the drag again away from the Shop GUI so a purchase click does not eat the input. Controls lists device-specific drag versus tap notes.
Why the Secret pickaxe is the poster child
The rainbow Secret tool in official media is the fantasy end of the visible ladder: two high-tier Diamonds collapsing into a unique look. It is marketing and a real merge target, not a separate questline. You do not unlock Secret by standing in a shrine. You unlock it by walking the duplicate ladder until Diamond is cheap enough to double.
Do not delete a Diamond because it “looks common.” That Diamond is half of Secret. The tier list ranks Secret-style tools at the top of visual power and starter rust at the bottom — not because rust is useless, but because rust exists to be doubled.
Multiple pickaxes at once
Later thumbnails (the “Day 99” split) show several pickaxes orbiting the avatar while mining. Merging does not always mean you only ever hold one tool. The loop can add extra swinging copies as you grow. That is why hoarding four untouched starters is worse than merging two and keeping two: merged tools hit harder, extras still occupy your orbit.
If your screen looks like the Day 1 half of that art — one lonely pickaxe — your next purchase is a duplicate, not a random legendary from a Robux bundle.
Common merge mistakes
- Saving every tool “for later.” Later is the merge. Later is not a museum.
- Buying a new name instead of a twin. New names without coins to double them stall the ladder.
- Merging during a Coin Potion while standing in Shop. Merge, then mine, or mine, then merge — do not browse. See code rewards.
- Using a script to mash merge. Community auto-merge scripts exist and can cost the account. Learn the manual combine first.
- Copying a CrazyGames Merge & Dig board layout. That is a 2D level game. This is a 3D Roblox simulator.
A practical merge plan
- Identify your current highest matching pair.
- Mine until you can buy one more of that pair (fast progression).
- Combine immediately.
- Repeat until the shop reveals the next named unlock.
- Only then start a new name, and immediately plan its duplicate.
Use the session checklist so this plan survives a short mobile session. Use updates if a patch adds luck-merge or auto-merge — we will not pretend those buttons exist until they show up in the live HUD or a patch note.
Merging is how a rusty cave screenshot becomes the Pro cave with gems. Everything else in this wiki exists to feed that one action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many pickaxes do I need to merge in Merge Dig Simulator?
Two identical pickaxes. Official art shows Diamond + Diamond becoming Secret.
Can I merge different pickaxe types together?
No. The names must match. A Diamond and a starter tool stay separate.
What is the Secret pickaxe?
A high-tier rainbow tool shown in official thumbnails as the result of merging two Diamonds. It is a merge product, not a separate lobby unlock.
Should I merge as soon as I have a pair?
Yes, unless you are one coin short of a better duplicate plan documented on the upgrade tier list. Hoarding twins is usually a stall.
